  • Vrede en Lust Barbere 2004 - This wine is a sophisticated dry rose (or light red wine), made in a Bordeaux Claret style. The blend is 36% Shiraz, 30% Cinsaut, 23% Merlot, 9% Malbec, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2004 had a cool December which delayed the harvest and improved the flavor profiles. Most vineyards produced lower yields and some bunches had to be dropped early due to uneven ripening. The Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon had small bunches and small berries. Quality was excellent with great balance; grapes were fully ripe with low sugar levels and this kept alcohol levels down and gave great acid balance A large percentage of the juice was derived by bleeding about 9% of the free-run juice from the red wines during the 10 hours of cold soak while the balance was from grapes harvested early in order to contribute natural acidity and lower alcohol.. The juice was treated like a white wine and fermented with no lees contact or malolactic fermentation, spending 9 months in stainless-steel tanks before stabilization and bottling. The Barbere displays fresh strawberry fruit and floral notes with a smooth finish, complexity, and full body. Enjoy Barbere by itself or as a precursor to red wine or pair it with pasta, pizza, seafood, shellfish, barbecue, or lighter dishes made with cheese. Winemaker Stephane de Saint-Salvy. From Simonsberg-Paarl region.
  • Vrede en Lust Classic 2003 - - This wine is a red 'Bordeaux-style blend' made from low-yielding vineyards of less than 3 tons per acre. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Malbec, and 4% Petit Verdot. 2003 provided a cool spring with large bud break and set. A perfect summer with warm days and cool nights resulted in a slow, steady ripening process which produced ripe grapes with solid acid balances. In addition half of the Merlot was green-harvested early to ensure optimum quality. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel and macerated for 20-25 days before pressing. Only free-run juice was used for the Classic. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation before blending. The wine aged for 12 months in 225 liter French oak barrels, ¼ of which were new. Minimum fining and no filtration preceded bottling. The wine was bottle-aged another 18 months. The nose is complex with chocolate, black currant, raspberry, and a hint of wood smoke. There is firm but elegant structure with some earthiness on the palate and a long finish. This is an elegant, food-friendly wine that is accessible upon release with the capacity to improve and mature for 4 years. Goes well with a wide range of cheeses, filet, richer meat dishes, and warm winter meals. Winemaker Stephane de Saint-Salvy. From Simonsberg-Paarl region. Rated 87 points by Wine Enthusiast.
  • Vrede en Lust Karien 2005 - This white wine is 87% Chenin Blanc and 13% Semillon which had some lees contact during the 6-month fermentation in stainless steel. 2006 provided low yields for these two grape varieties but the fruit picked had good balance. Once blended the wine was bottle aged another 3 months. The nose displays melon, tropical fruits, and ripe pear and these bright fruit characters follow through to the soft and less acidic palate ending with a smooth finish and fair body. Goes well with seafood, pasta, Asian cuisine, light meals, and salads. Great as an aperitif. Winemaker Stephane de Saint-Salvy. From Paarl region.
  • Vrede en Lust Reserve 2002 - This red 'wine is the most structured, elegant, and complex of the Vrede en Lust wines; this 'Bordeaux-style blend' possesses great aging potential. Created for the more serious wine connoisseur, the Reserve aims to reflect our Simonsberg-Paarl terroir using grapes from our specially selected vineyard blocks much higher up the slopes of the Simonsberg where the yields were low, 2 tons per acre. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and 4% Malbec. 2002 was the maiden harvest for the new Vrede en Lust cellar. 2002 had a wet, late spring with a very destructive outbreak of downy-mildew. Vrede en Lust suffered large losses; both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot crops were 30% below expectation but the remaining season were much better and yielded 'bigger' wine. There was 25 to 30 days of extended skin contact under strict temperature control. The Reserve was aged for 18 months in 225 liter French oak barrels, 3/4 of which were new and the rest one-year-old. Following blending the wine was bottle-aged another 24 months before release. There is a great concentration of cassis, blackberry, plums, and cigar box on the nose. The wine is full-bodied with a firm tannin backbone that supports a ripe, fruity palate which leads to a sleek and long finish. Drink now or age for 6 years. Goes best with more serious, steak or richer beef dishes. Winemaker Stephane de Saint-Salvy. From Simonsberg-Paarl region. All grapes estate-grown except the Petit Verdot. Real cork closure.
  • Vrede en Lust Simone 2003 - This red wine is made for wine lovers looking for an accessible, high-quality product at a price point that allows for regular enjoyment. This is a blend of 44% Merlot, 35% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, and 4% Pinotage. 2003 provided a cool spring with large bud break and set. A perfect summer with warm days and cool nights resulted in a slow, steady ripening process which produced ripe grapes with solid acid balances. In addition half of the Merlot and Shiraz were green-harvested early to ensure optimum quality. The varietals fermented slowly, separately under temperature control for 15-20 days on the skins. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was blended and aged for 12 months with wood. After minimum fining and filtration the wine was bottle-aged another 12 months. The wine bursts with ripe flavors of black currants and raspberries layered with caramel and dark chocolate, coffee, a hint of spice, and a silky finish. Drink now or age 2 years. Goes well with barbecue, pasta, richer meat dishes (like lamb and ox-tail), tomato-based dishes, and cheese dishes. Winemaker Stephane de Saint-Salvy. From Simonsberg-Paarl region.
